What is an LEI?

An LEI is your company's permanent global identity, in a register the whole world can read.

A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) - also called an LEI number or LEI code - is a unique 20-character code that lets anyone, anywhere, identify a legal entity without ambiguity. Built on the ISO 17442 standard, it is issued once, renewed each year, and published as open data by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) in the Global LEI Index.

Why the LEI exists

After the 2008 financial crisis, regulators found that nobody could reliably say which companies had traded with which. Company names are ambiguous, national registration numbers stop at the border, and the same group can appear under a dozen spellings.

The LEI is the answer the G20 and the Financial Stability Board settled on: one identifier per legal entity, issued by accredited organisations and published as a free public good anyone can check. It answers the two questions the market keeps asking - who is who, and who owns whom. In the EU, MiFID II and EMIR make it mandatory for financial reporting.

What an LEI looks like

Twenty characters. The first four identify the issuer - ours are 6574 - and the last two are a check digit that catches a mistyped LEI before it reaches anyone. LEI number, LEI code and Legal Entity Identifier are three names for the same twenty characters.

The code never changes. It survives a change of name, address, owner or issuer: transferring your LEI to us keeps the exact twenty characters you already have.

LEI vs. company registration number

They are not the same thing. A registration number is national - a Swedish organisationsnummer works in Sweden. An LEI is global and works everywhere. A company has both, and its registration number is one of the verified attributes published behind the LEI.

That is why a counterparty abroad can look you up without knowing how a Swedish organisation number is built, and why cross-border trades are reported against the LEI instead.

How to get an LEI

Search by company name or organisation number above, check the details pulled straight from the company register, and sign. An authorised representative of the entity must sign the application - that is GLEIF's requirement of every issuer, not a step we added.

A new LEI is normally issued within 15 minutes and published in the Global LEI Index. No express fee, because there is no slower route to charge for.

Renewing an LEI

Once a year the data behind the code is checked against the company register again and republished. That yearly renewal is what keeps the record trustworthy, and GLEIF requires it of every issuer.

An LEI that is not renewed goes LAPSED. It still exists and still identifies you, but it is published as out of date - and a bank running a check treats it that way. Renewing revalidates the data and marks the code current again.

Your LEI at the bank or broker

You don't register it yourself. Avanza, Nordnet and most banks read the Global LEI Index automatically and attach the code to your account once it is published, usually the same day.

That assumes the code is ISSUED. One that has gone LAPSED reads as out of date, and that is when a corporate account can be blocked from new purchases.

Who needs an LEI?

  • Companies that trade securities - shares, funds, bonds or derivatives. Mandatory under MiFID II since 3 January 2018.
  • Associations, foundations and other legal entities that trade securities.
  • Company-owned securities and endowment-insurance accounts at brokers such as Avanza and Nordnet.
  • Companies reporting to a trade repository under EMIR.
  • Entities filing under SFTR, MAR or CSDR.
  • Funds and their managers, each at its own level.
  • Sole traders that trade derivatives - for ordinary shares and funds the owner's own identity is enough.
  • Any legal entity that would rather be identifiable than approximately identified.

Common questions about LEIs

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get an LEI?
A new LEI is normally issued within 15 minutes of the order being signed and the data checked, and always within one business day. A transfer depends on the issuer holding it today: GLEIF gives them four business days to respond, and there is a further three-day window in which the move can be objected to.
What is the difference between an LEI and a company registration number?
A registration number is national and works in one country; an LEI is global and works everywhere. A company has both, and the registration number is published as one of the verified attributes behind the LEI.
How often do you have to renew an LEI?
Once a year. The code itself never expires - it is the status that lapses, and each yearly renewal revalidates the data and marks the code current for another twelve months.
What happens if my LEI lapses?
The code stays yours and stays published, but it is marked LAPSED and reads as out of date to anyone checking it. That is when a corporate account can be blocked from new purchases. Renewing republishes the data as current.
Does my LEI change if I transfer it to you?
No. The twenty characters stay the same, and so does your renewal date. That is what a transfer means under GLEIF's process - the record moves, the identifier does not.
Is it free to transfer an LEI to you?
Yes. There is no transfer fee - you pay the annual fee only when your existing renewal date comes round, at the same price everyone pays, with no lock-in and no multi-year contract.
How do I register my LEI with Avanza or Nordnet?
You don't have to. Avanza, Nordnet and most banks read the Global LEI Index automatically and attach the code to your account once it is published, usually the same day.
Does a sole trader need an LEI?
Only for trading derivatives, where EMIR requires one. For ordinary shares and funds the owner's own identity is used. Companies, associations and foundations trading securities always need one.
Are you an LEI issuer or a reseller?
An issuer. The Intelligence Company AB is a GLEIF-accredited issuer with its own prefix, 6574. Nobody stands between your record and the Global LEI Index.
Can I get an LEI for a company outside Sweden?
Not yet. We issue and transfer for Swedish legal entities. Anything registered elsewhere you can still look up here - the search covers all 3.4 million records in the global index.

MCP and REST

Search LEI codes and legal entities over MCP and a REST API.

Free to use. No API key, no account, no registration. An agent can always prepare an order on somebody's behalf: the data is pulled from the register, and whoever has to stand behind the order gets a link in their email and approves it there.

/mcp
Four tools over MCP: search, read one LEI, read one registration number, read the register's own size. Streamable HTTP, no session and no key.
/v1/search
Find a legal entity by name, registration number or LEI - across the whole Global LEI Index and the national company register at once.
/v1/entities/{lei}
One exact record by LEI. The code is checksum-checked first, so a mistyped LEI comes back as wrong rather than as missing.
/v1/companies/{number}
A registration number looked up directly, with the LEI if there is one - and the fact that there is not, if there is not.
/v1/pulse
What the register is doing right now: how many LEIs are live, the rate they are issued at, and the records published most recently.

An agent can prepare

An agent can search, look up and prepare an order. GLEIF requires a verified authorised representative of the legal entity, and an agent is not that - so a prepared order means the orderer has to confirm it by email.
